Memoirs of a Geisha

Memoirs of a Geisha is a 2005 film adaptation of the novel of the same name, produced by Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment and Spyglass Entertainment and by Douglas Wick's Red Wagon Productions. It was directed by Rob Marshall. It was released in the United States on December 9, 2005 by Columbia Pictures and DreamWorks. It stars Zhang Ziyi, Ken Watanabe, Gong Li, Michelle Yeoh, Youki Kudoh, and Suzuka Ohgo. Ohgo plays the younger Sayuri in the movie, which was filmed in southern and northern California and in several locations in Kyoto, including the Kiyomizu temple and the Fushimi Inari shrine.

The film was nominated and won numerous awards, including nominations for six Academy Awards, and eventually won three: Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design.

Memoirs of a Geisha revolves around a young girl, named Chiyo, who is sold into the life of a geisha and her struggle as a geisha to find love.

The Japanese release of the film was titled "Sayuri", based on the main character who was renamed as Sayuri in the movie.

This movie is both for children and for adults, it's the adventures and funny characters part for children, and the obscure affection part for adults. This is what makes this pixar movie more meaningful.

I do admire the careful and delicate making of cartoon characters of pixar company in Disney, they use bright colors, vivid characteristics, careful and touching details.

I watched this drama on the 21st of June in Beijing oriental avant-garde theatre.

Brief introduction:

After fleeing the countryside, two dogs named Wang Cai and Lai Fu (literally meaning "wealthy" and "good luck" in Chinese), travel to city in search of happiness and full of dreams. However, they soon find that things aren't as wonderful as they've imagined. The dogs, sometimes loved and sometimes abandoned, they philosophize about many issues: social phenomenon, poverty, love affairs, fake LV, Sudan I, transgenic vegetables, endowment insurance...To earn a living, they try different jobs - perform in the streets, participate in talent shows, become security guards. After being adopted by a rich family then are then abandoned and return to living on the streets. However these two friends never loose hope..

Analysis:

The drama emerged Italian commedia dell'arte, French comedy and Chinese traditional comedy together. It has creatively emerged improvisational performance together with well-knit realism acting. However, there're also controversials, like saying the actors were asking for applause, spending silly efforts, being garrulous.

Director Jinghui Meng , now working for the China National Drama Theater, is the most influential experimental drama director in Asia. Some of his best plays are Rhinoceros In Love, Amber, One Hundred Years of Solitude. Personally, I really like this director Jinghui,Meng, and I do admire experimental dramas. However, in this show, it is said that the original idea came from the two main actors random chatting, it wasn't the directors contribution.

I watched this rock drama on the 19th of June in the PLA opera in Beijing.

This is the first rock drama in China, it has explored a new format of stage performance. Except for the 9 professional stage actors and actresses, the rest of them are all from the chinese mainland's largest independent music company Shi Sanyue records.

Being absurd, funny, irony, It has revealed hidden rules in the music arena.
The drama imitated a rehearsal scene of a mucic awards, the rehearsal has gone haywire by all kinds of accidents, such as absence of super stars because of riding high horse, agency's requirement of awards ensurement, lip-synching of famous singers, equipment breakdowns... ...
Besides, saliva songs spreads widely, draft programs overrun, the disapproval of talented singers have all been revealed. Those make people can't help laughing, and feel doleful at the same time.
As what have been said earlier, "There is no coincidence being identical, please seat in number."
